Froude number
The Froude number can then be used to quantify the type of flow.
- If the Froude number is less than 1.0, the flow is subcritical. The flow would would be characterized as tranquil.
- If the Froude number is equal to 1.0, the flow is critical.
- If the Froude number is greater than 1.0, the flow is supercritical and would be characterized as rapid flowing. This type of flow has a high velocity which can be potential damaging.
