Welcome Letter
The mission of the COMET Program is to improve operational weather services through education and training, and through increased interaction between the operational and academic communities. We at COMET are dedicated to this mission and we're pleased to have the opportunity to play a role in what we believe will be an improved coupling of hydrology and meteorology in the modernized National Weather Service. The National Weather Service and other organizations sponsor COMET, a program of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). The decision to locate COMET here in Boulder provides you an important opportunity for involvement with the many research facilities and scientists in this area. We will help you to take advantage of this opportunity. As a part of UCAR, COMET also provides a mechanism for the involvement of academic experts in the design of COMET course and, perhaps most important, in the instruction process itself. The COMET approach is to teach at an advanced level through use of a combination of guest lead instructors and visiting lecturers from both academic and operational settings. Most class days are split between lectures and "hands-on" laboratory sessions that take advantage of our computerized teaching lab. We think you will be both challenged and rewarded by the activities you encounter here. I hope your stay in Boulder will be valuable to you, personally challenging and exciting. We look forward to working with you to help keep your knowledge current and to assist you in enhancing your hydrometeorological forecasting skills. Good luck in the course and in the challenging tasks ahead of you.
Sincerely,
