Cooling rates below the equilibrium level
Adler et. al., 1985 showed that severe thunderstorms typically started out with more rapid cooling rates than for non-severe storms. The figure below shows a large increase in the percentage of severe (hatched) storms as the cooling rate increases.
Caution here
- No mention about the homogeneity of the atmosphere
- Better resolution now leads to inflated cooling rates
