How Satellite Data can be used to Nowcast Supercell Morphology.

Introduction

Supercell morphology is largely governed by how precipitation is distributed around the updraft and the quantity of that precipitation. There are many uses in knowing the type of storm.

  • Low Precipitation supercells are poor tornado and wind producers but big hail producers. They are also easily visible to spotters.
  • Classic supercells are the most prolific producers of significant tornadoes, and also easyily visible to spotters.
  • High precipitation supercells tend to move rapidly, are difficult to spot, have a high flash flood threat, produce tornadoes and large hail.

Some factors affecting storms precip characteristics where satellite data can be used.

  • Storm-relative anvil-layer winds.

  • Seeding of storms.

  • Inflow moisture.
