First Day Information

Date:    3 April 2000

To:         Satellite Meteorology 00-1 Course Attendees

From:     Janice Brown and Wendy Pagel

Subject:  First Day Details

Welcome to COMET!

We at the COMET Program hope you had a safe, uneventful trip.  There are a few details that we would like to tell you about.

If you have any concerns about the accommodations at the Best Western Golden Buff please do not hesitate to contact the hotel staff at (303) 442-7450.   Shane Higbee and Mark Whitman are our main contacts, however, any staff member should be able to assist you with any situation that may arise.  If you prefer, you may always speak with either Wendy or Janice about your concerns and we will be happy to look into them for you.

Most of you will be using 3 COMET minivans to commute to and from COMET. Steven Apfel, Alan Olson and John Springer have agreed to drive and will receive keys at check-in.  Please see the Van-Pool List to find out in which van you will be riding. If you are planning to attend the tutorial the afternoon of Monday, 3 April please see the list here.*  Otherwise, plan to meet your driver in the lobby of the hotel by 8:00am on Tuesday, 4 April 2000.  It is the responsibility of the driver to make sure that everyone is in the van before it leaves for class. If you do not plan to ride in the van please notify your driver.

There are currently 21 attendees enrolled in the course.  Out of that number, 18 have requested transportation from the Golden Buff to class everyday.  The vans are available for your shared use after class.  However, they are first and foremost to be used as transportations to and from class each day.  After that, they are intended to be shared by all of the students to go to dinner, run errands, etc.  Please observe common rules of courtesy when using the vans outside of class.  Make sure you coordinate as many people/errands from your group as possible for each trip so that no one is left without transportation.  However, transportation after class is at the discretion of the authorized drivers who have made the commitment to drive to and from class each day.  The vans seat six comfortably but can hold seven each.  Only authorized drivers may drive the vans.

The vans have been filled up with gas, but during the course the driver is responsible for filling the van up with gas.  There is a Texaco credit card in the "log book" inside each van.  You cannot use the credit card in the "quick pay" machines at the gas pump, nor can you "run" the card through an electronic reader, or "punch in" the numbers on the electronic reader.  You must have the clerk manually take an imprint of the card, and you must sign the receipt.  These instructions are also in the "log book".  Please hang onto your receipt, and make sure it is legible and clearly shows the date, location of the service station and the purchase amount.  Please give the receipt to Janice or Wendy as soon as possible.  We ask that you leave at least a quarter tank of gas for the next driver.

VAN INSURANCE: As long as you adhere to the guidelines laid out in the Van Usage Policy, you will be covered by the UCAR Auto Insurance Policy.  There are insurance cards in the glove compartment which list our insurance agency and other pertinent details.  Make sure you always have one of these cards in the van.

If you find yourself without transportation to class on any day please give Janice or Wendy a call at 303-497-8338 or 303-497-8469 and one of us will gladly pick you up.

It is our understanding that James Partain, Tim Kieckbusch and Gary Huffines will either have their own vehicles available while in Boulder or will have another means of transportation to/from class each day.  If this is no longer the case, please let us know as soon as possible and we will factor you into the van pool.

Finally, a registration fee of $30.00 will be collected on the first day of class.  We will provide you with a receipt that you can submit on your travel voucher.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Boulder, and that your experience in the course is worthwhile.  If you have any questions, concerns or problems please let us know.  Again, Janice's phone number is 303-497-8338 and Wendy's is 303-497-8469.   You should give these numbers to your co-workers and family so they can leave messages or contact you in the case of an emergency.  Messages will be delivered to you as quickly as possible.

*PLEASE NOTE: The Tutorial begins at 1:30pm on Monday, 3 April 2000.  On Tuesday, 4 April, class begins at 8:30am.  And class begins at 8:00am each morning starting Wednesday, 5 April 2000.
