Satellite Meteorology Orientation Manual

Course Goals

  1. Increase understanding of scientific principles of satellite remote sensing


  2. Enhance knowledge of GOES-8/-10 capabilities with emphasis on:

    • Quantitative use of digital data sets
    • Interpretation of imagery and derived products
    • Satellite meteorology techniques for operations and applied research


  3. Improve understanding of satellite data as part of an integrated observing and forecasting system


  4. Increase awareness of applications of satellite observations as analysis, nowcasting, warning and forecasting tools


  5. Assist in on-site training by (1) establishing a virtual classroom/laboratory as part of Integrated Sensor Training; (2) providing on-line access via the SatMet Homepage to presentations, data sets, software and training aids; and (3) practicing on-site training techniques during the course.
