Satellite Meteorology Orientation Manual
Course Overview
The SatMet course will focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of
the GOES Imager and Sounder Data sets, with specific emphasis on the
characteristics of the atmosphere, cloud and surface, which determine
their radiative signatures. Presentation will cover methods for
using these signatures to discriminate and track various atmospheric
phenomena. Major topics covered in the course include:
- Radiative Transfer
- Sounding Retrieval Methods
- Derived Products
- Imager Spectral Bands
- Multi-Channel Applications
- Water Vapor Imagery
- Nowcasting Severe Convection
- Planning for On-Station Training and Research
- Quantitative Precipitation Forecasting (QPF)
- Satellite Imagery on AWIPS
- Multi-Spectral Analysis of Convection
- Satellite Data Integration with Models
- Winter Storms
- Polar-Orbit Satellite Observations
- Aviation and Marine Forecasting
