Welcome Letter

Dear Satellite Meteorology Course 00-1 Attendee:

As the Satellite Focal Point for your office, you have both the honor and the responsibility to guide the necessary professional development of operational forecasters. We want to help you prepare for that vital task.

As you may know, COMET is part of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). The COMET mission is to improve operational meteorology through education and training, and to increase interaction between the operational and academic communities. Our staff is strongly dedicated to this mission and is pleased to play an important role in nurturing the ability of our weather services to provide accurate mesoscale weather forecasts and precise weather warnings.

The educational philosophy of the COMET residence course is to use instructors from academia and from operational communities. Your SatMet course will have two Co-Lead Instructors; Stanley Q. Kidder from CIRA/Colorado State University will be the university co-lead and Donald Moore of the National Weather Service, Spokane, will be the operational co-lead. The Course Coordinator will be Mr. Tony Mostek from the Office of Meteorology, who is currently located at the offices of the COMET program. The course format emphasizes case studies, and visiting lecturers from universities, government laboratories, and operational forecast center offices.

We will do everything possible to make your stay in Boulder and at COMET professionally rewarding, scientifically exciting, and personally challenging.

Best wishes for the many challenging opportunities that lie ahead.

Sincerely,

Dr. Gregory P. Byrd
Residence Courses Coordinator
