SatMet Map Discussions

Don Moore and Tony Mostek

Daily weather briefings will be produced and presented by the students, emphasizing the use of GOES and POES imagery/products from both the imager and sounder for real-time forecasting. Students will be required to present one 20-30 minute briefing as part of a 3-person Map Discussion Team . At the conclusion of each discussion, the team will provide a forecast for the afternoon/nighttime period for the area of interest. This forecast will be briefly verified at the beginning of the Map Discussion on the following day. Each presentation should focus on one active weather region over North America.
The goals of the map discussions are:

1. Demonstrate applications of effective satellite observation techniques in a real-time setting.

2. Enhance the ability of the forecaster to use satellite as an observation and forecast tool in the forecast operations with the intent of improving products.

3. Demonstrate the various display tools available on the AWIPS, WEB and SOO/SAC workstations in the operational mode.

4. Give the forecaster hands-on experience in utilizing effective satellite satellite observing and forecasting techniques, thereby aiding the forecaster in setting up the transfer of knowledge in the forecast office.

5. Provide ideas and an approach for satellite briefings at your forecast office.

The format of the map discussions will be determined in part by ongoing weather events.
