Hurricane Fran: Near Landfall (IR)

Highlights

Both Hurricane Fran and former Hurricane Edouard can be seen in this loop. The eye is usually the point of reference used for tracking hurricane motion.

What to Observe

  • Hurricane Fran's eye appears as a warm region, indicative of low cloud tops or surface temperatures
  • Hurricane Fran's eye is embedded within a region of colder, higher cloud tops
  • By the end of the loop, the cold cloud top area (red region) completely surrounds Fran’s eye; this indicates Fran has a well-developed eye and eyewall
  • Hurricane Fran has colder cloud-top temperatures than Edouard

Status

  • Approximately 26-36 hours prior to landfall
  • Fran is a category 3 (Saffir-Simpson scale)
