Hurricane Fran: Near Landfall (VIS)

Highlights

As sunrise occurs in this loop, Hurricane Fran looks like a classic, fairly symmetrical, well-formed hurricane while the former Hurricane Edouard is more diffuse and non-symmetrical. In visible imagery, an expansion or contraction of bright white regions and changes in the eye’s diameter and definition may indicate hurricane strengthening and weakening.

What to Observe

  • Fran has a well-defined eye and compact circular pattern of cloudiness that extends several hundred kilometers in diameter
  • Edouard has a diffuse eye and wide spread area of cloudiness

Status

  • Approximately 26-36 hours prior to landfall
  • Fran is a category 3
