Hurricane Fran: After Landfall (IR)

Highlights

The remnants of Hurricane Fran are now over Virginia and Pennsylvania. Extensive flooding occurred after some areas received as much as 12 inches of rain. Historic Alexandria near Washington, D.C. was partially evacuated when the Potomac River rose and caused street flooding of greater than 1 meter (3 feet).

What to Observe

  • The eye is no longer visible
  • The cyclonic rotation is much less than in previous time periods
  • Cloud-top temperatures are warmer over land than they were over water
  • Fran is dissipating

Status

  • Approximately 12-18 hours after landfall
  • Downgraded to a tropical depression
