Hurricane Fran: After Landfall (VIS)

Highlights

Hurricane Fran was expected to make landfall in South Carolina, but actually made landfall in North Carolina. Storm surges from 1 to 6 feet were experienced from South Carolina to Washington, D.C. with locally higher storm surges of 8 to 12 feet in North Carolina. Fran is now cut off from its moisture and energy source, the ocean.

What to Observe

  • The eye is no longer visible
  • The cyclonic rotation is much less than in previous time periods
  • Fran is dissipating
  • Satellite imagery data was incomplete for some portions of this time period. The black areas on the bottom portion of the imagery indicated that no data exist for those areas

Status

  • Approximately 12-16 hours after landfall
  • Downgraded to a tropical depression
