Hurricane Nora: Near Landfall (VIS)

Highlights

Nora is moving over a sea-surface anomaly during this time period (see IR imagery for this time period for more detail). Traditionally, coastal upwelling of cold ocean water along the western edge of Baja California causes hurricanes to weaken, but a warm sea-surface temperature (SST) anomaly allows Nora to stay over waters that are 26.5°C (80°F) and above.

What to Observe

  • The counterclockwise low-level inflow
  • The clockwise high-level outflow
  • The dry slot where no clouds are present

Status

  • Approximately 7-15 hours prior to landfall
  • Category 1
