Hurricane Nora: After Landfall (VIS)

Highlights

Nora’s direction of motion is now being influenced by a mid-latitude system located to the northwest (the cloud line approaching California from the west is associated with the mid-latitude system). As Nora dissipates, a remnant circulation continues to exist in the upper atmosphere at about 3076 meters (10,000 feet) where wind speeds near hurricane-force (near 119 km/hr or 74 mph) sheared off the tops of hundreds of large (1-2 ft diameter) trees in the Dixie National Forest in southwestern Utah.

What to Observe

  • Nora has no eye
  • Nora has no cyclonic circulation
  • Nora is dissipating
  • Nora is being drawn northward by the counterclockwise rotation of winds associated with the low- pressure center located to Nora’s northwest
  • Land features like the Arkansas River and forested areas in Colorado and the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico

Status

  • Approximately 7-17 hours after first landfall
  • Downgraded from category 1 to tropical storm
