Hurricane Opal: After Landfall (IR)

Highlights

Since Opal interacts with a mid-latitude system, precipitation amounts are heavy. Areas in Florida and Alabama received 5-10 inches of rain while the Carolinas received 2-5 inches. Over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, 1-3 inches of rain was common, ending an extended dry period.

What to Observe

  • As Opal becomes extratropical, it takes on the comma shape associated with mid-latitude systems
  • Cloud-top temperatures are significantly warmer
  • Opal is starting to dissipate

Status

  • Approximately 3-15 hours after landfall
  • Downgrades from category 1 to tropical storm to tropical depression
