Eye Wall

Description

Immediately outside of the eye is the eye wall region, an area of vigorous tall/deep clouds, heavy rainfall, and the strongest observed winds.

Eye Wall in VIS Imagery

Note the distinct eye wall in the visible satellite image (lower left). You will note that the eye wall is a bright white ring of clouds associated with tall convective thunderstorms immediately outside the eye.

Eye Wall in IR Imagery

The infrared imagery (lower right) shows the eye wall region as a ring of the coldest cloud tops (<-70°C in the image) corresponding to the tops of deep convective cumulonimbus clouds.
