Introduction

Goal

The lesson will enhance the forecaster's ability to utilize Eta model forecasts in the forecast process, incorporating knowledge of characteristics, model errors, physics, and biases.

Prerequisite Knowledge

Familiarity with using NWP models

Knowledge of the basic differences between global (spectral) and regional (grid point) NWP models

Objectives

Forecasters will be able to:

Identify the Eta model characteristics and how errors are introduced with each one

Vertical and horizontal resolution

Terrain

Convective parameterization

Grid-scale precipitation

Approximated physics

Boundary layer processes

Identify recent changes within the Eta and their impact

Identify the Eta model biases and make corrections to them

Assess the validity of the Eta model forecast based on the accuracy of its analysis fields

Make adjustments to the Eta model output based on its known sources of error, characteristics, and biases

Using the Materials

The lesson contains three topics, each of which has the following components:

Background information, which provides detailed information about the topic and can be used by you and/or your staff to prepare for the lecture/discussion (the central activity for each topic). The background information is available in two formats: on a Web page and in a Microsoft Word document, both of which can be printed out and distributed.

Lecture/discussion materials, which summarize information from the NWP Symposium and include points for discussion and relevant examples. The materials are available in both PowerPoint and Corel Presentations and can also be previewed on the Web.

Additional sources of information, which contains links to Websites and PowerPoint presentations related to the NWP Symposium.

The lesson also includes an extensive lab exercise that provides forecasters with an opportunity to evaluate the performance of three versions of the Eta model in a forecast scenario. It should be undertaken by forecasters after the three topics have been completed.

All of the materials can be used as is or customized to meet the training requirements of your forecasters.

After you have finished reviewing the materials and/or putting them to use, we would like to get your feedback. Please click 'Send Your Comments' at the bottom of the Eta Home Page and complete the survey. Thank you!
