College of Charleston:" Evaluating the efficacy of Internet-based hurricane surge forecasts ."

Abstract

This joint effort with the Charleston NWS office will examine if an interactive Internet-based approach to Hurricane Watch and Warning packages is more effective in conveying storm surge risk to the general public. The interactive surge forecasts have been proven in concept, and the first part of this study will flesh out the remaining work. SLOSH output, historical tidal data, and landmark data have been archived. Computer code has been written to combine these data and deliver an image depicting inundation for selected landmarks. This project will concentrate on connecting the remaining data to the software and to test the database with a focus group of users.
