This project builds on past work that implemented operational, high-resolution WRF model runs at WFO Missoula and WFO Fairbanks. The primary goal is to focus on the handling of temperature inversions by the models, which typically do not (but sometimes do) capture the inversions in rugged terrain. The researchers will define a comprehensive set of inversion case studies for both areas and will perform tests to try to identify why some simulations capture inversions correctly, why others do not, and how model skill can be improved.
