Previous research projects by the University of Hawaii and the Honolulu WFO have demonstrated the usefulness of high resolution models for properly depicting the island terrain and land surface conditions for operational local weather forecasts and research applications. In this project, daily high resolution WRF-NMM model runs will be evaluated by the WFO, and the model will be improved with two-way nesting procedures and better representations of island terrain and land surface conditions over the Hawaiian Islands. High resolution model archives will be used to construct climatology for non-trade wind cases in order to develop conceptual models for island flow response and weather throughout the diurnal cycle.
