University of Arizona/Penn State: "NWS Flash Flood Forecasting in Two Hydrologically Distinct Regions Using an Improved Distributed Hydrologic Model."

Abstract:

The purpose of this Cooperative Project is to develop an improved hydrologic model that is suitable for forecasting significant flooding on small rivers and streams where hydrologic forecasts are not currently available. The model will build upon the KINEROS-2/NWS model developed under a previous Outreach project. The new work will extend the capabilities of K2/NWS from event to continuous simulation; from infiltration excess to saturation excess runoff generation common in humid regions; and from rainfall flood generation to snowmelt and rain on snow flood generation. The model will be evaluated for several rapidly responding watersheds in two WFOs in hydrologically distinct regions (Binghamton WFO and Tucson WFO).
