COMET Workstation Tutorial Exercise

WSR-88D Algorithm Testing And Display System (WATADS)

 

2 August 1999

 

1) Log on to the Hewlett-Packard Workstation:

a. To log on: Ensure cursor is all the way to the left of the username box.

b. Enter your login name <return> and your password <return>.

 

2) Initiate Watads:

a. At the command line type watads

b. The WATADS Main Menu will appear.

c. Click "Select Existing Data Directory"

d. Enter /met/cases/salsa/u2/21jan99/FFC/

e. Click "OK".

 

3) Display Imagery:

a. Click the button "Run RADS Image Display Program".

b. The RADS Control Panel appears with choices of imagery.

c. A window will appear with buttons for several types of radar data:

d. Click once on "REF".

e. Select "Reflectivity".

f. A new window will open with the image displayed.

 

4) Become Familiar with the information displayed

a. Note the information along the bottom of the image includes the date, time, radar id, volume scan number, and elevation angle.

b. The buttons across the top of the image may be used to modify the display.

c. Click the "Overlays" button and select WSR-88D Storm. This button may be used to toggle the displayed information. To remove the menu box click "CLOSE"

d. Click "Maps" to see a list of options. Click "Polar Grid". This button may also be used as a toggle. To remove the menu box click "CLOSE"

e. Click "Zoom" and a series of key strokes will be displayed above the buttons. To zoom once, place the cursor over a location and click once with the left mouse button. To zoom back out, click the right mouse button. Click the middle mouse button to recenter the image.

f. Click "X-Sect" to define a cross-section. Click the left button and hold it down while moving it to define the line along which to draw the cross-section. Use the right mouse button to launch the cross-section. A new window will pop-up containing the cross-section. To remove the window click "CLOSE"

 

5) Load a loop of images.

a. Click "Loop".

b. Click "Animation Off". Select Reflectivity. Enter beginning Volume number. Enter End Volume Number. Click Start.

c. In the Reflectivity Animation window, click the right mouse button for animation options.

d. To stop animation, click "Animation On" in the Loop menu. This will close the animation window.

e. To exit the Loop menu, click "CLOSE"

 

6) To select a specific time:

a. Click the button displaying the time and volume scan displayed. Select a different time.

b. OR enter a volume number in the space above the time and volume scan displayed.

c. OR use the backward/forward buttons to select the volume scan.

 

7) Exiting WATADS

a. On RADS Control Panel, click "QUIT".

b. On the Main Menu, click "CLOSE".
