Recent advances in total lightning datasets and storm analysis techniques have improved the understanding of relationships between storm-scale processes and lightning production. The recent emergence and future expansion of intra-cloud lighting datasets hold great promise to both researchers and operational forecasters. The upcoming GOES-R satellite will house the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), which will provide total lightning information to all NWS offices for the first time. This project will identify severe weather events where total lightning information can aid warning operations and develop 2-3 Warning Event Simulator (WES) cases to help train NWS forecasters on the use of total lightning products during warning operations.
