South Florida University: "Atmosphere and ocean conditions associated with U.S. rip current rescues and/or drowning."

Abstract:

This project will examine lifeguard reports for information on rip current rescues and will plot locations of rip current rescues and/or drowning locations in the United States. Oceanic and meteorological data from buoys in closest proximity to the rescue/drowning locations will also be collected. The importance of this work can be highlighted when rip current deaths are put in context to deaths from other severe weather. In 2010 rip current deaths were responsible for 64 deaths around the country. This number was higher than deaths associated with lightning, tornadoes, hurricanes, and the cold winter during 2010.
