Course Info: Private Sector Classroom Scenarios
Private Sector Classroom Scenarios
Course Description
The Weather, Water, and Climate (WWC) enterprise is a rapidly growing, interesting, and rewarding career field. Despite this, career opportunities and the skill sets required in the WWC private sector are not well known by students. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) Mind the Gap committee serves to bridge this gap by connecting university students, instructors, and professors to resources that will prepare them for private sector employment.
These classroom resources aim to begin bridging the gap by allowing students to participate in real industry tasks and activities. Two scenarios provide authentic meteorological and corporate datasets from an impactful weather event, and prompt students to assume the roles of a meteorologist at an energy company or a consultant to a state department of transportation. Students will apply their scientific skills alongside workplace power skills as they grapple with decision-making, time constraints, and communication to employers and stakeholders.
Intended Audience for This Course
These resources are intended for upper-level meteorology and Earth System Science students, but will extend well to students in fields that utilize weather information, such as economics, energy production and management, or risk analysis.
