Course Info: Satellite and Stability Analyses for Deep Convection Forecasting in the Tropics

Satellite and Stability Analyses for Deep Convection Forecasting in the Tropics

Course Description

In the Tropics, deep convection is commonplace, but differentiating between flood-producing deep convection and every-day rains is still a challenge.  In the mid-latitudes, there are multiple indices you can use to identify deep convection and intensity potential, but in the Tropics, where the dynamics are different, there aren’t many indices to choose from that are effective for this type of forecast.

This 30-45 minute lesson explores satellite analysis of deep convection, and then compares that to multiple forecast convective indices to identify which are the most effective in the Tropics.

Intended Audience

The intended audience for this lesson is any operational tropical forecaster familiar with tropical satellite analysis.
